Gone Girl

Join me in reading and discussing 'Gone Girl' by Gillian Flynn *Now a major motion picture distributed by Twentieth Century Fox*

I saw the movie and since I enjoyed it so much - I decided to take a crack at the book!

Anyone free for a chat to discuss the book and movie sometime between November 21 - 30?

The Remains Of The Day by Kazuo Ishiguro

Time to trade-in the satrical love story of The Princess Bride by William Goldman, for a solemn and reflective story of a butler in postwar England, The Remains of The Day by Kazuo Ishiguro.

For reference, here is the quick Amazon summary of the title :
"The Remains of the Day is a profoundly compelling portrait of the perfect English butler and of his fading, insular world postwar England. At the end of his three decades of service at Darlington Hall, Stevens embarks on a country drive, during which he looks back over his career to reassure himself that he has served humanity by serving “a great gentleman.” But lurking in his memory are doubts about the true nature of Lord Darlington’s “greatness” and graver doubts about his own faith in the man he served.

A tragic, spiritual portrait of a perfect English butler and his reaction to his fading insular world in post-war England. A wonderful, wonderful book."

We are tentatively planning a mid-July chat, so grab the book soon and get ready to discuss the book and movie next month.

Stay tuned for a doodle later this month to pick a firm date and time to reconvene.

Princess Bride Chat RESCHEDULED

Hey gang,

It sounds like we need to reschedule our chat on The Princess Bride, as the person most obsessed with it *coughCindycough* can't make it on the 31st anymore.  (I'd give her a harder time about it, but it's her birthday eve, so I'll go easy.)

So, let's try this again--respond to this poll, and we'll announce a new date shortly!

Princess Bride Chat: 5/31, 4 pm Pacific

It looks like the best date and time for our next chat is Saturday, May 31st at 4 pm Pacific.  That gives you a couple of weeks to finish reading (or rereading) The Princess Bride.  You'll also need to get your hands on a copy of the movie, as we'll be watching it together while we chat in our chatroom.

Or, if you aren't able to find a copy of the movie (I found a used DVD on Amazon for $3), there's always this delightful reenactment:

Vote on a May Date for The Princess Bride

Thanks for the fantastic chat on Divergent, after a bit of a hiatus.  It was great to be able to compare the book to the movie.  Will anyone be reading the rest of the series (besides those who've already finished it)?

Next up is the critically acclaimed tour de force The Princess Bride!  I am assuming we want to read the book in advance, but watch the movie concurrently with our chat--comment if you had something else in mind.

Vote for our May date to chat here:

Note: one of the dates coincide with when a certain someone is in San Francisco, which could make the chat a little less virtual.  Another is on that certain someone's birthday, which might not work at all, or could really excite her, given her passion for this book/movie.  And, I threw in some times on Memorial Day, in case people get it off and are available to chat then.

Warning: this is a kissing book.  ;-)

Divergent Chat: 4/19, Noon Pacific

“We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another.”
Thanks to everyone for filling out the Doodle poll.  It looks like our best date and time is Saturday, April 19th at noon Pacific.  We'll meet in our chatroom to discuss the book and the movie, so don't forget to finish reading and go see the movie!

P.S. - The movie website has an aptitude test.  Leave your results in the comments!
